25 lakh litre water sprayed to tackle dust

New Delhi:

While air pollution comes with its repercussions, measures required to tackle it are no less a strain on the environment. On Monday , approximately 25 lakh litres of water was sprayed on roads, kerbs and central verges to settle the dust, with the promise of intensifying the drive in the coming days. With dust having been identified as one of the major contributors to air pollution in Delhi, and the alarmingly poor air quality of the past few days, Monday was the first day of implementing the government order to fight the menace. The public works department (PWD) used a little more than 250 tankers for spraying water along major roads across the city.
The water used was treated effluent from sewage treatment plants. “As per the government's order, we carried out water spraying along several roads. Agencies like New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC ) also watered their areas. The water was sourced from Delhi Jal Board, which has a huge amount of treated effluent that the agencies are encouraged to use for non-potable purposes. In the coming days, we will take more water to tack le dust,“ said an official.
At several locations, the staff deployed also took the opportunity to wash the trees and shrubs along the roads. “The leaves collect a lot of dust and if the agenda is to control dust, the trees must be washed,“ declared one of them.
The government has also banned construction activity but at several locations, primarily in residential areas, work continued unabated. On Monday , the Delhi government notified its decisions, banning all construction and demolition work.
While PWD said that work at its sites had been stopped, some amount of activity could be seen at the Barapulla Phase II site where a crane was lifting earth.NBCC, which is in the middle of the Kidwai Nagar redevelopment, said it had stopped all work at its sites.
However, a bigger concern for the Aam Aadmi Party government, which is focusing on dust control measures, is to ensure that loose earth lying at construction sites is either removed, barricaded or constantly watered to prevent it from flying around. The worst offenders in this case are government contractors themselves who take no such care, especially if the project is a small one.

Girl beaten to death by dada

New Delhi

Thrashed When 16-Yr-Old Returned Home After Four Days
A 16-year-old girl was beaten to death by her father in northwest Delhi's Rani Bagh after she went missing from her house for four days on Friday . The girl's family said this was not the first time that she had left without informing. The accused, Ram Bihari, told the police that he was frustrated as the girl, Renuka, went missing for the third time in the last two months. He said he only slapped her a couple of times, after which she collapsed and died. However, the injury marks on the body seemed otherwise.
Renuka went out without telling anyone on October 30 and didn't return until late at night, the family members told police. They kept trying to call her but got no response and later found her phone unreachable, they added. She returned home on November 2.
Bihari has been arrested and a case of murder has been registered against him at Rani Bagh police station. His wife, Geeta, filed a complaint claiming that she was present at the time of incident along with her four children.
Geeta said whenever Renuka went missing she protected her, but this time Bihari was uncontrollable and did not stop beating her once she returned. Geeta, a domestic help in Pitampura, told the police that Renuka came to the house where she was working on November 2 around 3pm. She took her home where Bihari, a rickshawpuller, took a laundry bat and hit Renuka on the head.
A call was made to the police control room after which a team rushed to the spot.Renuka was taken to a nearby private hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

SECURITY THREAT - Pistol, bullets found in bag near JNU gate

Varsity: CCTV To Be Installed In & Around Campus
A bag containing a pistol and seven live cartridges was recovered from the main gate of JNU early on Monday . Police said the bag might have been kept by someone who was familiar with the campus as the gate was not under CCTV surveillance. A case under the Arms Act has been registered at Vasant Kunj (north) police station.Police suspect that the person panicked seeing cops raid the campus to search for BSc student Najeeb Ahmed and left the bag near the gate to avoid detection. The possibility of an attempt to spread panic on the campus has not been ruled out.
The matter came to the fore when a security guard noticed an abandoned bag at 1.30am near the main entrance. “He thought a student must have forgotten it and would come to collect it later,“ said a police officer.
“When no one came till late evening, the guard opened the bag and found a countrymade 7.62mm pistol, seven live cartridges, a water bottle and a screwdriver. They informed the PCR and the administration staff,“ the officer added.
Police reached the spot and seized the bag, which they claimed was new. Teams from the anti-terror units and senior officials from the south district have taken matter seriously.
Meanwhile, the JNU administration has decided to install CCTV cameras in and around the campus.
“The presence of weapons inside the campus raises a grave concern about the safety and security of all residents. Taking serious note of such incidences, the administration is in the process of installing CCTV cameras at the gates, sensitive areas, and public places,“ a press note from the university said.
“This news reminds us of Amit Jani (a member of Hindutva brigade) who threatened to enter JNU and shoot Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid in March when a fight was on against the police crackdown on students. We demand a proper inquiry to find out who kept the bag at the gate,“ said JNU Student Union president, Mohit Pandey .

Man stabs wife, daughter to death

Says Wife Suspected Him Of Engaging In Incest

When a man approached Ramesh Nayak, a Gram Rakshak Dal constable, at 1am on Monday, Nayak was surprised. The man, Pratapram Mehgwal, 36, said that he had killed his wife and daughter at home and was surrendering to face the consequences.Nayak quickly went to Meghwal's house nearby and found Meghwal's wife Leela, 35, and daughter Komal, 15, on the floor with multiple stab wounds.
According to Bavla police, Nayak became the complainant in the case of murder and destruction of evidence against Meghwal, who is a native of Pali in Rajasthan. Meghwal sells snacks near his house at Shantinagar Society in Bavla town. Meghwal has four children, a son and three daughters. Two daughters live and study with Leela's family, his son and one daughter lived with the couple.
P A Raval, sub-inspector of Bavla police station, said Meghwal was tired of domestic quarrels. “According to his statement, Leela more than once expressed suspicions about his relationship with Komal and this had enraged him. Along with other issues, the family would fight almost every day.Meghwal bought a big knife and hence the murder does not appear to be impulsive,“ Raval said.
On Sunday night, Meghwal got a chance as his son had gone to Rajasthan and he attacked Leela with the knife and slit her throat while she slept, at around 12.30 am. As Leela struggled, Meghwal stabbed her multiple times. As Komal was awakened by the noise, Meghwal panicked and attacked her as well, stabbing her in the chest and stomach.
“He burned his bloodstained clothes and thus an offence of destruction of evidence has also been registered. He was in his vest when he approached the constable and surrendered. We are yet to question Leela's family to get more information about the couple,“ said Raval.

Sahara raises Rs 150cr from Safal deal

Mumbai:

The Sahara Group, under pressure from the Su preme Court to refund money to its investors, has raised Rs 150 crore from its controver sial 106-acre Oshiwara land parcel by tying up with Ahmedabad-based developer Safal Group. This sprawl, which is part of a larger 550-acre swathe belonging to the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy family , has long been in the eye of a storm. Environ mentalists and citizen groups have opposed construction on this land, stating it is a no-development zone which was once covered with mangroves. But the city's revised development plan (which is yet to be approved) has allowed development on this land if part of it is used for public housing.
Last month, Sahara signed a development management agreement with the BN Safal Group. An email questionnaire sent to a Sahara spokesperson on Monday remained unanswered.
Sources said Sahara has not diluted its equity in the Oshiwara project. “ As and when the land is developed, the Safal Group will be entitled to 15% of the profits after deducting all development and construction costs to be borne by Sahara,“ said the source. The valuation of the Oshiwara land will be in the region of Rs 16,000 crore if development is permitted in future.
Under the city's new development plan, a part of the Oshiwara land has been reserved for a metro rail yard, but the same portion of land is also marked for residentialcommercial development. It is learned that builders Avinash Bhosale and Vikas Oberoi have a stake in part of the 550acre sprawl. Sources told TOI that about 10 days ago, Rs 150 crore paid by Safal was electronically transferred to the Sahara-Sebi account, which is under the SC's supervision. In 2014, Sahara sold its 105-acre land in the Bopal area of Ahmedabad to Safal for Rs 550 crore. Last month, the apex court had asked Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy to deposit Rs 200 crore by November 28 while extending its interim order granting him parole in connection with the return of money to Sahara investors. Roy was sent to jail in May 2014 after he failed to comply with the court's order directing him to return investors' money (over Rs 17,600 crore with 15% interest).

Two actors killed in chopper stunt

Tippagondanahalli (Karnataka):

Two actors drowned while shooting for a Kannada movie after they jumped off a helicopter into the Tippagondanahalli reservoir near Bengaluru, on Monday afternoon. A motorboat stationed on the banks to pull the actors out of the water developed a last-minute snag and remained at the shore, resulting in the tragedy.Duniya Vijay , hero of the movie Maasti Gudi, who also made the jump with the other two, survived as he was rescued in the nick of time by a local who rushed to his help aboard a coracle. Search and rescue teams continued to search for the bodies of the two drowned actors late into the night.
Officials of the BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board), the custodian of the reservoir, said the film crew had violated the conditio nal approval; they had barred the crew from taking aerial shots and entering the water.
Approval had been granted for a day's shooting in areas around the backwaters. “The conditions laid out in the approval letter (dated November 4, 2016) state they are not supposed to shoot in the prohibited area, which applies to the reservoir's waters as well. Permission was not given to jump into the water and perform other stunts,“ an official said. The pilots were protesting a new duty rostering software which they said, left them fatigued, with minimal rest and long periods away from home. For years now, airline pilots in India have resorted to impromptu mass casual leave or sick leave to protest against airline management decisions.
