Five-foot croc found in palace compound

A five foot long crocodile was rescued from Rajmahal compound in the city on Saturday afternoon.
The reptile was rescued by a team of forest department officials who had rushed to the Laxmi Vilas Palace compound after being informed about the crocodile venturing into the area which is circled by mango orchard.
According to forest department officials, labourers who were working in the farm spotted the crocodile and called wildlife rescue activist Rakesh Wadhwana. Wadhwana and the forest department team reached the spot to capture the reptile. “The crocodile seems to have entered the area after coming out from the tributary of Vishwamitri river that flows adjacent to the compound,“ said an official.

The crocodile was captured after two hours of rescue operation which had begun at around 1pm. By the time forest department's team rushed to the spot, a huge crowd, mostly labourers, had also gathered in the area.
The female reptile also had some minor injury marks on its head. “It seems it has received this injury marks while it was trying to make its way out of the wild weeds and thorns of `gando bawal' that is found in abun dance near the compound,“ said the official.
The crocodile which has been kept at the forest department office in Kamati Baug will undergo medical check-up before it is released. This is the second time that a crocodile had ventured into the palace compound. Earlier on September 30, a seven foot long crocodile was found resting on the palace lawns.

Dog killed after it bit 10, including four children

It's not just Kerala where extreme steps are taken against stray dogs closer home, residents of Hatkeshwar decided to beat a dog to death after it bit 10 persons on Saturday including four kids.Locals alleged that when contacted over the emergency, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials told residents that their stray-dog vans were engaged. The stray dog was first noticed in the area on Friday, after it bit three-yearold Aruna Shinde below Vrundavan Apartment near Hatkeshwar crossroads at 10 am. The girl's lower lip was bitten off by the dog which also bit another 10year-old.
“Soon after, Kokila Boricha, 60, was getting down the stairs at Karnavati Apartments when the dog bit her on her leg. Her host, Jenti Patel, who came out to see what happened, was also bitten. The dog soon went on a rampage in the area. It also bit a cow and a goat,“ said Harshad Patel, a social worker from Amraiwadi.
As the number of pati ents started increasing at the LG Hospital, the locals contacted AMC to catch the dog and remove it from the area to prevent terror. However, after getting to know that it would take time to send a vehicle, the locals ran out of patience and beat the dog to death, as they suspected that it had gone rabid.

Patel said that dog menace is a reality in many parts of Maninagar, Amraiwadi and Khokhra and timely action is required from the civic authorities to prevent such brutal incidents in the future.

Most startups not keen to shop at IITs this year

Mumbai:

50% Fewer Cos Interested After Blacklist Episode
Startups do not seem to be the flavour of this placement season. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have seen a 50% fall in the number of startups that will be present for the campus recruitment drive. Missing conspicuously are e-commerce unicorns Flipkart, Paytm, OlaCabs and Snapdeal that haven't yet signed up to shop at any of the IITs.While the response from startups has been tepid, overall it's a happy placement sea son for IITs with pre-placement offers up by 25-30% compared to last year.
Early this year, the IITs barred 31 companies, including delivery service Grofers, baby clothing website Hopscotch, Portea Medical and a host of other startups, from participating in their placement drives.
They were blacklisted for a year for “playing with the careers of students“ by making last-minute changes to their offers, revoking offer letters, falsely hiring them for affiliates and delaying joining dates. The All IIT Placement Committee, which decided to blacklist these companies, estimated that around 135 students from across IITs were affected by these companies' actions.
While many startups have stayed away , several are being screened by placement teams before they are allowed to visit the tech campuses. At IITMadras, 54 startups have registered. Last year, 98 were present. At IIT-Bombay , there are fewer startups among companies that have listed to recruit.
“We are screening the companies that want to recruit from our campus,“ said a placement team member of IIT-Kanpur. “Their funding, cash flow and the year of founding, essentially their stability, is what we are checking,“ he added.
From the Roorkee campus, 52 startups had recruited last year; this year, only 35 have registered. “There is a significant decrease in the number of startups that have registered for placement drives this year due to funds crunch and other market issues,“ said placement head N P Padhy . Some regulars too have not yet signed up: Delhivery , Mad Street Den, Aura Semiconductor and Practo.“We encourage good startups to participate in placements,“ said Padhy .
While large e-commerce companies have not yet confirmed their participation, some IITs are in touch with them. “It could be possible that they do not have manpower requirement. It really hasn't been a great year for many startups,“ said another placement dean.
The process of empanelling firms wanting to recruit talent from the IIT campuses is open until the end of November.

“Until last year, most of the startups used to sign up early on. Also, the firms that were blacklisted made up about 30%-40% of the startups that used to visit all the IITs. So it was certain that the numbers would fall this year,“ said a placement dean.
