Can’t blame us for Fatah’s bag fiasco, says CISF

NEW DELHI: Holding back check-in bags of Canadian national Tarek Fatah at Delhi Airport on Friday has left the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) fuming as the airline the Pakistani origin writer took to fly Goa had said this happened due to the CISF.

Fatah's check-in bags had been held back at IGI Airport for advanced security checks due to which they could not make it to the Vistara flight he was taking to Goa. The airline had said that CISF had decided to do additional checks on the bags and told Fatah that the same would be sent to Goa by a later flight. Fatah took the flight he was booked on and the bags were sent by the next Delhi-Goa Vistara flight on Friday.

The CISF has taken umbrage to this claim of Vistara. "A national airline should know that CISF is not responsible for screening check-in bags. That job is done by the Delhi Airport security staff. We screen hand bags. Blaming us for a passenger not getting his bag shows the ignorance of the airline," said a senior CISF official.

"If the check-in bag screening team feels that a bag has to undergo advanced screening, then the bags are opened in front of the passenger. Our job, in such a scenario, is to escort the passenger to the screening room to ensure that he or she does not misbehave or get violent when being taken there," said the official.

The CISF is going to take up the issue with Vistara. "We will call the senior official of the airline. You cannot unnecessarily blame an agency just because of ignorance of facts," the official said.

A Vistara official said the airline is not responsible for screening of check-in bags as that job is done by security agencies. It, however, accepted that post check-in security checks of baggage is done by Delhi Airport security and not CISF.

A Vistara spokesperson said: "After the baggage check in the airline has no role in the inspection of the baggage. It is the airport security that does the screening. We apologise for inadvertently mentioning CISF instead of DIAL security."

CISF is upset that the airline incorrectly briefed Fatah because of which the writer felt the agency was responsible for what happened with his bags. "I was looking forward to @IndFoundation #IndiaIdeas Conclave in Goa, but #CISF security feels I'm a security threat & held back my luggage," Fatah had tweeted on Friday.

"A passenger may not know who does what, but the airline should know better. We will seek answers from the airline," said the CISF official.

Both the channels will remain off-air from 00.01hours on November 9 till 00.01 hours on November 10.
According to sources, a child labour welfare commissioner had first filed a complaint against News Time Assam. In the showcause notice issued to the channel in October 2013, it was observed that its telecast of the case of the tortured boy “appeared to compromise the privacy and dignity of the child while also exposing him to harm and stigma“.
In the case of the programme that appeared to be defamatory towards women, the inter-ministerial committee had asked the channel to run an apology scroll but it did not comply .
