Super Moon, meteor shower for astronomy aficionados

Ahmedabad:

If you are not accustomed to looking up to heavens, mark November 14 on your calendar as it will be the night where the moon may be about 14% bigger visually and 30% brighter than usual full moon nights. The reason for the phenomenon is the moon's closest distance to the earth since 1948.Science City's senior scientist Narottam Sahoo said that the average distance between the earth and its closest celestial neighbour is 3.84 lakh kilometres. “Due to the moon's slightly elongated or bit, the distance varies from time to time. On November 14, the distance will be 3.56 lakh kilometres which is closest in seven decades,“ he said.Another astronomy event this month is annual Leonid meteor shower which will be at its peak on November 16 and 17.
Sahoo said that the meteor showers are marked by short term light streaks in the night sky by fall of debris, and there are a number of well-known meteor showers such as Orionids and Geminids getting their names from constellations -Orion and Gemini.“But Leonid meteor shower, seems to be originating from constellation Leo when seen from the earth, is special due to its large volume and longer duration. The shower takes place when the earth passes from debris left behind by comet Tempel-Tuttle. For the best view, one has to go away from the city lights and look in the eastern direction,“ said Sahoo.
