Govt orders Assam news channel off air

1-Day Ban After Channel Revealed ID Of Tortured Minor
The Union government has ordered an Assam-based television news channel to remain off air for a day next week for allegedly revealing the identity of a minor brutally tortured while serving as a household help. The inter-ministerial committee also set up by the Union information and broadcasting ministry also accused News Time Assam of two other violations -airing gory visuals of corpses, and a programme deemed derogatory to women. The ministry , however, allowed the channel to “carry out the three awards of oneday-off-air concurrently“.
The government's move comes days after Hindi news channel NDTV India was issued a similar directive for allegedly compromising national security in its live coverage of the security operation that followed the terrorist attack on the Pathankot IAF base in January . Both the channels will remain off-air from 00.01hours on November 9 till 00.01 hours on November 10.
According to sources, a child labour welfare commissioner had first filed a complaint against News Time Assam. In the showcause notice issued to the channel in October 2013, it was observed that its telecast of the case of the tortured boy “appeared to compromise the privacy and dignity of the child while also exposing him to harm and stigma“.
In the case of the programme that appeared to be defamatory towards women, the inter-ministerial committee had asked the channel to run an apology scroll but it did not comply .
