Collision forces DMRC into damage control

New Delhi:

`Negligence By Korean Firm Staff To Blame'
The collision of two driverless trains on Friday couldn't have come at a worse time for Delhi Metro, which has gone to town highlighting their safety feature.RS Anand, director of rolling stock, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, said on Sunday that Hyundai Rotem, the company manufacturing these trains, had admitted that the incident occurred due to negligence on the part of its staff.
The company will now meet DMRC's safety team on Monday to decide on further action.
Anand, however, maintained that the incident was not a reflection on the train's capability or technology .“This incident has nothing to do with the safety and reliability of the unattended train operation system to be introduced by DMRC in phase-III.“
Questions over procedure, however, remain. The DMRC said the incident occurred as the Hyundai Rotem staff moved one of the to-becommissioned trains without authorisation. DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said: “During initial investi gation, it was found that a train was driven in the reverse direction from the rear cab by a Hyundai Rotem staff. As per the procedure, shunting (moving from one line to another) the operation of a train can be done only by the DMRC staff. Also, reverse driving is not permitted at all.“
DMRC remained non-committal on why someone from Hyundai Rotem was allowed to perform such an operation. All that Dayal could offer was that the company staff hadn't followed the procedure. Delhi Metro, meanwhile, in a release to the media, elaborated on the safety aspect of the driverless trains. It said, “Mainline train operations are fully safe and there is no scope of any such collision due to provision of automatic train protection and automatic train operation during passenger services.“
The release added that it was “wrong to assume“ that these trains could impact the safety of passengers or derail the introduction of unattended train operations system in phase-III.
