Metro fares may finally go up today after 7 years

New Delhi

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Board is likely to approve revision of fare on Monday . A panel appointed by the urban development ministry had suggested 25% hike in minimum fare and 66% increase in maximum fare. The fare fixation committee (FFC) headed by retired judge M L Mehta of Delhi HC had recommended that the minimum fare should be increased from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and maximum fare should be raised to Rs 50 from the present Rs 30. It had recommended that fares be rounded off to the closest Rs 5 denomination for convenience of passengers and DMRC personnel.
These recommendations were reportedly made keeping in mind passengers' “affordability“ and DMRC's “sustainability“, which is in dire need to increase its revenue. Government officials said considering the recommendation of FCC was one of the major items on the board's agenda on Monday . “As per the norm, the DMRC Board is bound to accept the recommendation. This time, one of the members in the committee had not signed the report and said the study was not complete,“ said an official. But two members had signed it and as per the DMRC Act, the report has to be submitted within three months of its constitution.
TOI had earlier reported how the panel had recommended fare slabs of Rs 10, Rs 15, Rs 20, Rs 30, Rs 40 and Rs 50.
Faced with growing expenses on repayment of Japanese loan and increasing power bill, the DMRC had sought to double fares and reportedly proposed minimum fare of Rs 15 instead and maximum of Rs 70. The last fare revision had taken place in 2009 when the minimum fare was increased to Rs 8 and maximum to Rs 30.
